Membaca notasi not balok adalah keahlian (sight reading skill) yang harus diasah terus setiap saat oleh murid. Bagaimana tidak, begitu kita belajar lagu baru, kemampuan membaca not balok akan mempercepat penguasaan lagu tersebut.  Dari statistik yang ada,  rata-rata murid menemui kesulitan dalam membaca not balok yang disebabkan karena mereka kurang mengetahui cara yang benar, atau guru mereka tidak tahu/kurang me-implementasikannya pada tiap sesi pengajarannya.
Berikut dibawah ini adalah tips untuk mengembangkan "skills" membaca not balok (sight reading) dengan baik:
  1. Observasi kunci (clef), tangga nada (key signature) & tanda birama (time signature).
  2. Lihat keseleruhan dari lagu untuk menemukan hal-hal yang tidak terduga, seperti: perubahan kunci, interval satu oktaf, accidental (#/Ăľ)
  3. Hitung pulse dan ritmiknya! Rasakan pulse pada tubuh kita dengan tap, clap, pat, dan snaps! Pilihlah tempo yang tidak terlalu cepat maupun terlalu lambat! Rhythm adalah faktor yang sangat penting pada kemampuan sight reading. Karena tanpa rhythm, lagu tidak akan terbentuk dengan baik meski not benar.
  4. Nyanyikan nada dengan "la", "ma", "na" atau alphabet nada "C", "D", "E" dari setiap melodi di tangan kanan dan tangan kiri secara terpisah!
  5. Visualisasikan jari jari sedang bermain diatas tuts piano tanpa membunyikannya, letakkan jari-jari anda diatas pangkuan anda!
  6. Mainkan lagu sambil tetap menghitung dan merasakan pulse sambil mata tetap melihat ke arah partitur!
  7. Nilailah permainan anda sendiri, apakah akurat atau tidak? Bila belum, mainkan sekali lagi dalam tempo yang lebih lambat.

Yang paling perlu diperhatikan dalam membentuk band adalah:
1. Visi & Mimpi Untuk Sukses
Dia boleh hebat bermusik, dia boleh jago bikin lagu, dia juga boleh tanpa tandingan ketika nyanyi, tapi tanpa visi dan mimpi yang jelas, itu semua omong kosong. Personil band harus punya visi yang sama. Saya ingin meminjam lirik Laskar Pelangi-nya Nidji, ‘mimpi adalah kunci untuk menaklukkan dunia’.
Menyatukan visi bermusik sebuah band itu perlu untuk menjaga keutuhan sebuah band. Perbedaan visi bermusik antar anggota bisa membuat sebuah band akhirnya bubar atau anggotanya mengundurkan diri. Hal ini disebabkan setiap anggota punya visinya sendiri tentang musik yang ingin dimainkannya, baik sekarang maupun di kemudian hari. Maka tiap anggota band perlu saling mengetahui dan menerima visi bermusik anggota lainnya ini serta saling menyesuaikan.

2. Punya Conecting & Chemistry Antar Personil

Kadang-kadang ketika membuat band, banyak yang merasa tak menemukan koneksi antar personil. Koneksi itu dalam bentuk komunikasi personal, emosi lagu yang dibuat, dan feel ketika membuat aransemen. Kekompakan itu penting, tapi komunikasi dalam hal apapun, menjadi lebih penting. Banyak band yang bubar atau ditinggalkan personilnya karena perasaan yang tidak enak, dipendam dan akhirnya “meledak” menjadi emosi tak terkontrol yang meruntuhkan kebersamaan band itu.

3. Kesatuan Hati.

Disini maksudnya agar anggota band saling akrab satu sama lain, sehingga terjadi keterpautan emosi antar anggota. Keterpautan ini memudahkan permainan musik yang padu. Caranya misalnya nonton bareng, nangis bareng, ketawa bareng, diskusi bareng, dsb. Tampaknya remeh, tapi percayalah sisi emosi seperti ini membantu kesehatian antar personil. Ini akan memberi efek saling memiliki dan saling melengkapi.
4. Mencintai Musik[nya]
Mencintai musiknya, menjadi hal yang sangat krusial ketika membentuk band. Banyak band yang berkibar sekarang, lahir dari pengaruh musical yang beragam. Ada personil yang suka rock, pop, jazz atau mungkin dangdut. Tidak masalah selama mereka sepakat dan sehati mencintai musik yang mereka sepakati untuk mainkan. Kalau main pop, cintailah pop. Kalau main rock, cintailah rock. Sense of Belonging itu akan membantu menikmati musik yang mereka mainkan. Enjoy.

Setelah melewati fase pembentukan band tadi, lantas jalan tidak menjadi lebih mudah. Secara musical karya mereka masih perlu diuji oleh pendengar dan penikmat musik yang lebih luas. Ada beberapa hal yang bisa membantu meningkatkan kemampuan musical dan mempelajari selera musikal masyarakat, tanpa harus ‘melacur” ikut arus trend saja.
1. Meningkatkan Wawasan Musikal
Buat seorang musisi, dalam level apapun, pengetahuan soal musik itu sangat penting. Seorang musisi mengekpresikan dirinya lewat alat musik yagn dikuasainya. Alhasil, wawasan musical itu jadi penting sekali. Penguasaan pengetahuan musik akan membantu musisi dalam berekspresi, memainkan serta menciptakan musik. Sekadar catatan, dalam sejumlah wawancara yang penulis lakukan, banyak musisi yang merasa cukup dengan pencapaiannya sekarang dan tidak merasa perlu belajar lebih baik. Sayang sekali…
2. Meningkatkan Penguasaan Instrument
Makin mahir si musisi itu memainkan alat musiknya, jelas makin baik. Apalagi kemudian bisa menguasai alat musik lain yang tidak menjadi core musiknya. Proses musical dan lahirnya karya apik, bisa muncul dari banyak instrument. Ketika musisi itu punya kemampuan yan terus meningkat, proses penciptaan karya itu juga akan meningkat secara kuantitas dan kualitas.
3. Latihan Personal
Maksudnya memainkan instrument musik tanpa rencana terlebih dahulu. Pokoknya mainkan saja instrumentnya mengikuti kata hati. Hal ini berguna untuk meningkatkan kemampuan musisi mengekspresikan dirinya, mengenali dan mencurahkan emosinya melalui instrument musik. Musisi besar sekelas Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney atau Iwan Fals dalam banyak wawancara selalu mengatakan mereka sampai sekarang masih berlatih dan berlatih.
4. Latihan Bersama [Ngejam]
Maksudnya suatu band secara bersama-sama memainkan alat musiknya masing-masing tanpa ada rencana terlebih dahulu. Banyak aransemen bagus dan legendaries, lahir ketika personilnya latihan bersama. Ketika mereka menemukan chemistry dan emosi tertumpah, biasanya akan lebih lepas.
5. Mengasah Kepekaan & Keindahan
Musik tak hanya bicara aransemen, tapi juga lirik lagu. Akan lebih menyenangkan ketika masing-masing personal band ini, mau mencoba mendengarkan dan membaca hal-hal lain yang membantu kepekaannya berkarya. Gitaris coba mendengar harpa, drummer coba mendengar gendang, atau kibordis mencoba mendengar gitar akustik.
Kemudian penulis lirik coba banyak membawa karya satra, menonton teater atau menyimak puisi-puisi yang bagus. Tidak harus membuat lirik yang ribet dan sok sastrawi, tapi menyentuh ranah kepekaan akan keindahan. Paling tidak bisa menjadikan lagu itu nyaman dan enak dinyanyikan dengan liriknya.
6. Memperluas Wawasan Berpikir
Musisi tidak harus sarjana, tidak harus doktor. Lulusan SMA atau lebih rendah juga tidak dilarang. Tapi dia harus berani membekali diri dengan wawasan dan pandangan yang lebih luas supaya karyanya juga tidak kacangan. Meluaskan wawasan berpikir itu perlu supaya seorang musisi dapat menciptakan lirik-lirik lagu yang indah, menyentuh perasaan dan mengena ke pendengar lagu-lagunya.
Lagu dengan lirik macam ini dapat bertahan disukai pendengarnya lebih lama alias dikenang orang. Selain itu dengan wawasan berpikir yang luas memudahkan seorang musisi dalam menggali dan menciptakan beragam jenis musik.

Membentuk Band Yang Solid



Sudah bukan hal yang asing lagi kalau saat ini banyak band-band baru bermunculan dan meramaikan kancah persaingan di industri musik Indonesia. Akan tetapi tidak semua band-band itu sukses atau paling tidak bisa bersaing dengan para kompetitornya di industri musik. Kebanyakan hanya booming sesaat dan setelah itu, mereka seperti tenggelam dan bahkan tidak terdengar lagi gaungnya di industri musik Indonesia.
Ada banyak hal yang menyebabkan band-band tersebut tenggelam.
1. Tidak solidnya band tersebut
2. Tidak siap mental untuk menghadapi persaingan dengan band-band lainnya.
3. Persiapan yang terlalu instant
4. Kemampuan individual dari setiap personil yang tidak mumpuni sebagai seorang musisi.
Disini yang akan gw bahas dan garis bawahi adalah solidnya sebuah band. Berbicara tentang solid, solid disini sendiri dapat disama artikan dengan loyal. Yup, loyalitas personil sebuah band terhadap bandnya memang sulit untuk dibangun. Terkadang mereka hanya mengedepankan ambisi untuk bisa dikenal orang dan sukses tanpa melihat hal-hal yang diperlukan sebagai dasar agar band mereka bisa bertahan di tengah-tengah persaingan di dunia musik yang sangat ketat di jaman sekarang ini yakni solidnya band tersebut.
Untuk bisa membentuk sebuah band yang solid bukan hal yang mudah dan tidak bisa dalam waktu yang cepat. Suatu hal yang luar biasa jika suatu band bisa menjadi band yang solid dalam waktu yang cepat. Membentuk sebuah band yang solid tidaklah semudah membalikkan telapak tangan.
Ngeband bukan hanya untuk sekedar jadi famous
Apa yang perlu dilakukan untuk membentuk sebuah band yang solid?
==> Visi dan misi. Samakan dulu persepsi masing-masing personil untuk masa depan band ke depannya. Hal ini yang paling utama harus dilakukan karena dalam band ada beberapa personil dengan beberapa isi kepala yang berbeda dan sudah barang tentu bukan hal yang mudah untuk menyatukannya dalam waktu yang singkat. Bicarakanlah dulu dari hati ke hati antara sesame personil. Keluarkan semua unek-unek dan apa yang menjadi keinginan dan harapan dari masing-masing personil dari band yang dibentuk. Dengan demikian, proses penyatuan dan pencarian jalan tengah untuk menyamakan visi dan misi akan lebih mudah.
==> Ego para personil. Berbicara tentang ego sudah barang tentu bukan hal yang mudah untuk menekannya. Terutama dalam bermusik. Para personil tentu saja harus bisa benar-benar memahami kalau bermain dalam band bukanlah bermain solo. Porsi musikalitas para personil tentu saja harus diseimbangkan satu sama lain. Kalaupun ada yang ingin menonjolkan musikalitasnya harus dibagi secara merata agar tidak ada yang merasa terasingkan dalam permainan musik dari band itu sendiri. Hal seperti ini bisa membuat loyalitas personil berkurang dan pada akhirnya bisa keluar dari band tersebut. Menekan ego juga bukan hanya dalam soal bermain musik, akan tetapi juga dalam kehidupan sehari-hari seperti berkompromi dengan jadwal latihan dll.
==> Disiplin. Disiplin pada jadwal latihan yang telah ditetapkan bersama dengan cara tidak datang terlambat pada saat jam latihan apalagi sampai tidak hadir pada saat jam latihan tanpa memberi kabar pada personil dan tanpa alasan yang tepat. Disiplin juga pada diri sendiri dengan cara berlatih sendiri dirumah agar pada saat latihan bersama tidak mengganggu jalannya latihan hanya karena kita lupa lirik lagu, lupa chord lagu, dan tidka menguasai jalannya lagu.
==> Kebersamaan dan saling medukung antar personil. Membentuk kebersamaan dengan cara sering-sering kumpul bareng di luar jam latihan agar bisa saling mengerti karakter satu sama lain sehingga dapat menemukan cara saling menghadapi karakter masing-masing. Saling mendukung tidak hanya dalam kegiatan band akan tetapi juga dalam kegiatan diluar band juga dapat membentuk kebersamaan yang kuat. Dengan cara ini maka para personil akan bisa saling menghargai satu sama lain.
==> Keterbukaan antara personil. Jangan takut untuk dikritik dan mengkritik. Memberi kritikan disini adalah dengan cara memberi kritikan yang membangun, contohnya “Kamu memainkan part itu sudah bagus, akan tetapi, lebih bagus lagi kalau kamu memainkannya seperti ini.” Jangan menggunakan kata-kata “kamu salah memainkannya” dan kata-kata sejenis karena hal ini dapat membuat mental personil yang dikritik menjadi down. Menerima kritikan adalah hal yang lebih bagus lagi. Membuat kritikan itu sebagai pemicu untuk bisa bermain lebih bagus lagi adalah hal yang lebih baik ketimbang membalas kritikan dengan argument yang ujung-ujungnya bisa menimbulkan perselisihan dalam band.
==> Loyal dan yakin terhadap band sendiri. Hal terakhir adalah hal utama yang penting. Kita harus yakin pada band kita sendiri kalau band kita bisa sukses seperti band-band lain yang sudah lebih dulu sukses. Jangan hanya karena ada tawaran lain yang lebih menggiurkan kita meninggalkan band kita begitu saja. Kalaupun ada tawaran lain dan kita ingin menerimanya hendaklah dibicarakan dahulu dengan personil yang lain dan mencari jalan tengahnya agar tidak memberi dampak negative bagi kedua belah pihak.
Demikianlah tips yang bisa gw bagi teman-teman yang ingin membentuk band. Yang perlu diingat adalah ngeband adalah bukan hanya sekedar untuk menjadi terkenal akan tetapi juga berbicara mengenai bagaiman kita menyajikan esensi musik yang baik terhadap pendengar. Salam musik!

APA ITU MUSIK INDIE




Apakah definisi dari musik indie menurut loe? Sebenarnya menurut gw, musik indie sebagai aliran atau genre musik itu “not even exist” ( tidak ada-red), karena yang disebut musik indie itu adalah untuk membedakan antara yang mainstream dengan indie.
Jadi musik indie adalah istilah untuk membedakan antara musik yang dimainkan oleh musisi profesional dengan musisi amatir. Tapi yang pasti indie adalah gerakan bermusik yang berbasis dari apa yang kita punya, do it yourself, etika yang kita punya mulai dari merekam, mendistribusikan dan promosi dengan uang sendiri. Walaupun nantinya akan ada perbedaan lagi antara indie dengan D.I Y itu sendiri.
Bagaimana pengkriterian antara indie dengan mainstream? Umumnya yang dimaksud dengan mainstream adalah arus utama, tempat di mana band-band yang bernaung di bawah label besar, sebuah industri yang mapan. Band-band tersebut dipasarkan secara meluas yang coverage promosinya juga secara luas, nasional maupun internasional, dan mereka mendominasi promosi di seluruh media massa, mulai dari media cetak, media elektronik hingga multimedia dan mereka terekspos dengan baik.
Jadi jika berbicara kriteria dari mainstream dengan indie, itu lebih kepada industrinya, perbedaannya lebih kepada nilai investasi yang dikeluarkan oleh perusahaan rekaman. Kalau masalah talent atau talenta, tidak ada yang memungkiri kalau band-band indie terkadang lebih bagus daripada band-band mainstream. Jadi di sini hanya masalah uang, karena industri musik berbasis kepada profit, jadi label menanamkan modal yang besar untuk mencari keuntungan yang lebih besar, ya, itu tadi pada nilai investasinya.http://simphonymusic.com/
